So what is Khmer snack, Khmer snack usually serve in a platter, with 5 items of snack.

Some cake, bakery, and sweet snack such we often sees in Indonesian or Malaysian cuisine are bit much similar with these Khmer snack. If in Europe got their potato or fish chips as snack, then in Cambodian, they name it as Khmer snack.

The name Khmer actually became one in Cambodian culture, and it might be the reason why they name their culinary as Khmer snack. Cambodian in particular is a constitution monarchy in South East Asia, the word Khmer follow after the country because of history recorded that the Khmer emperor ever rules this country long time ago.

Snack of course are very tempted to be brought along for the next hours of days ahead (some snack could last for 3 days), and these snack could be one of your food gift for your family or relatives at home. For long distance travel and taking food with you then the question would be about the survival food. The important thing to kept the food in fresh condition, is with sterile and the most affordable food storage.

Okay back to the culinary. In Cambodia, one of the things that should not missed is the “Dining for a Cause” which is a program of the government to assist community groups who are less fortunate by setting up restaurants. The profits of restaurants are collected and used to run programs to help those in need.

You might think that these type of restaurant would be way of exclusive, but you’re incorrect, actually some of the location of the restaurant took place in building or houses which are having European architecture. So its not like some deserted area, its pretty organized and quite complete offering Cambodian cuisine. Along with that many craft created by local residence also offers in there. The results of that craft can be seen at the dinner table such as napkins, coasters, place mats, etc..

If you translate it roughly it got literal meaning of pig skin cake, don’t know exactly why they name it like that, I guest because of the texture or layer of the cake like pig skin culinary.

Some people even saying that they called it ‘Banh Da Lon’ because the cake have Chewy texture when chewed.
These cake of Vietnam has a unique sense of ‘pig skin cake’. The shape and texture, the color of green and white made of pandan, green beans, or durian. Curious?

For the Chinese community, a kind of cake is also known as the 9-layer cake. But the banh da lon itself is identical with the color green alternating with white.

Traditional cakes that taste sweet is made from a mixture of tapioca flour and rice flour. Delicious sweet flavor comes from a mixture of coconut milk, milk, and sugar that makes the white layer. While the green color derived from pandan, mung beans, aka green beans, and even durian. Even in their home countries often use the leaves ‘he cam’ to produce a purplish color.
